about

This is one of the 7 songs Czech Jewish poetess, writer and composer Ilse Weber wrote during her imprisonment in the Nazi’s Theresiendstadt camp-ghetto between 1942 and 1944. Ilse Weber helped as a nurse in the camp’s hospital, attending to the children infirmary and singing for the young patients. When Weber’s husband was deported to Auschwitz in 1944, she volunteered to join him with their younger son, Tommy, to avoid breaking up the family. She and the boy were sent to the gas chamber upon their arrival. 'Wie ist die Welt so stille' ('Why the world is so quiet').
